Growing up in Buffalo, New York, amidst a landscape marked by stark contrasts between natural beauty and heavy industry, I witnessed the contradictions of our impact on the environment. Buffalo, situated on the edge of Lake Erie, with Canada as its neighbor and proximity to the majestic Niagara Falls, is a picturesque city. However, it was also home to steel plants and manufacturing facilities that emitted black smoke and massive pollution, contributing to the contamination of Lake Erie and nearby waterways. The result was water so toxic that it endangered both aquatic life and human recreation.
One haunting example of environmental degradation is the infamous Love Canal, where a chemical company callously dumped toxic chemicals for decades. This led to severe health issues, terminal diseases, and the eventual abandonment of once-vibrant neighbourhoods, which were transformed into a toxic wasteland. To this day, Love Canal remains an empty brownfield, a stark reminder of the environmental cost of unchecked industrial practices. Witnessing this devastation left an indelible mark on me and made me acutely aware of how humanity, in its pursuit of progress, can inflict almost irreversible damage on the environment.
From a young age, I discovered my passion for horticulture, finding immense satisfaction in planting trees, bushes, and flowers to create vibrant gardens and beautiful landscapes. Over the years, I have planted thousands of trees and plants, watching them flourish. When I relocated to Atlanta, Georgia, my journey took a new direction, leading me to become involved in disaster response following natural events such as flooding, tornadoes, and hurricanes. Initially, I assisted in cleaning up devastated areas, alongside a dedicated team and a significant amount of labor, supplies, and financial resources. I can attest that areas affected by complete devastation can be restored, rebuilt, and replanted, bringing them back to almost normalcy, though leaving behind some scars as reminders of the disaster. As we witness extreme weather events occurring more frequently, it has become clear that we must come together to act and protect our environment to the best of our ability.
The disturbing images of our planet drowning in waste—plastics floating in our rivers, lakes, and oceans, and trash strewn across land—are appalling. My passion for nature, coupled with my experience in disaster response, has driven me to focus on environmental issues, raise awareness, and seek solutions to problems like cleaning up what has been carelessly discarded. Trash Talk Tom is my initiative to raise awareness, find solutions, and inspire action to address these pressing environmental issues. This is a monumental task, but through prevention, encouraging a shift in mindset to prioritize how we care for our surroundings, implementing sustainable solutions, promoting best practices in recycling, reassessing our product choices, and stopping trash from intentionally entering our environment, we can move in the right direction.
Currently, I share my time between Atlanta, Georgia, and Copenhagen, Denmark—a country with ambitious, forward-thinking environmental goals and achievements. Denmark’s extensive recycling program and high sustainability targets serve as a model for many countries. I believe that knowledge and solutions from various countries can be shared globally to help achieve a cleaner world. I am shocked by how much trash is carelessly thrown or dumped in nature, and it’s disheartening to see how even the beauty of each state in the U.S. is marred by litter that could be prevented and stopped.
I believe we all need inspiration, motivation, and support in combating the major environmental issues affecting our daily lives. I seek to partner with others on cleanup projects across the U.S. and globally to restore the beauty of our landscapes, waterways, and oceans. This mission inspires me to be proactive and accelerate my efforts, using social media to raise awareness, launch anti-litter campaigns, and demonstrate how a clean environment is beneficial for both our mental and physical health. By collaborating, we can create synergy and work toward a cleaner, greener world—because the Earth is one thing, we all have in common. It is time to care, time to act, and come together to be the best stewards of our home, planet Earth.
Sincerely,
Tom
